Canadian citizens and permanent residents may be able to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada through one of two options:
- Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
- Super Visa
Each year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets a limit on how many PGP applications will be accepted and uses an invitation process to choose who can apply.
Option 1: Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
PGP is a permanent residence pathway for parents and grandparents. You can only apply if you receive an invitation from IRCC.
Who can sponsor parents or grandparents?
You may be eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents if you:
- received an invitation to apply
- are at least 18 years old
- live in Canada
- are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- have enough income to support the people you want to sponsor
- you must provide proof of income
- you may include a spouse or common-law partner as a co-signer to combine income
- meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations
Sponsorship undertaking
Sponsors must meet government eligibility requirements and commit to a sponsorship undertaking for up to 20 years (depending on IRCC rules in effect at the time of application).
Option 2: Super Visa
If you are not invited under PGP—or if you want a faster temporary option—the Super Visa may allow parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended stays (subject to eligibility).
