Understanding Express Entry

What Is Express Entry and How Does It Work?

Express Entry is an online system managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for eligible skilled workers seeking Canadian permanent residence.

Candidates first need to meet the requirements of at least one participating federal immigration program. Eligible candidates may then create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool.

The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks eligible candidates using applicable factors. IRCC conducts invitation rounds, which may have different selection criteria and minimum CRS scores.

Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply may submit a permanent residence application within the applicable deadline.

Important: Meeting program requirements, entering the pool, receiving an ITA and being approved for permanent residence are separate stages.

Express Entry eligibility does not guarantee an invitation or an approval.

Express Entry Pathways

Immigration Programs Managed Through Express Entry

Express Entry manages three federal immigration programs. Some provincial nomination streams also operate alongside Express Entry.

Canadian Work Experience

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class is designed for skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience.

Eligibility depends on the type and duration of work, language requirements and other program conditions.

Canadian Experience Class Guidance →
Skilled Workers

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The Federal Skilled Worker Program may be suitable for eligible skilled workers with qualifying work experience gained in Canada or abroad.

Selection considers program requirements involving skilled work experience, language, education and other applicable factors.

Explore FSW Selection Points →
Skilled Trades

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

This program is intended for eligible skilled tradespeople with qualifying work experience.

Requirements include relevant trade experience, language criteria and an eligible job offer or certificate of qualification, as applicable.

Provincial Nomination

Express Entry Aligned Provincial Nominee Programs

Some provinces operate nomination pathways aligned with Express Entry. Candidates must satisfy the relevant provincial requirements and qualify under an Express Entry program.

A qualifying provincial nomination accepted through Express Entry can provide 600 additional CRS points under the applicable rules.

Understanding provincial nominations: BC PNP is not a fourth federal Express Entry program. Its eligible Express Entry aligned streams involve separate provincial eligibility criteria. Nomination and an ITA cannot be guaranteed.

Comprehensive Ranking System

How Can an Immigration Consultant Help With Your CRS Score?

Your CRS score helps determine your ranking in the Express Entry pool. A professional assessment can help verify the information in your profile and identify factors that may affect your ranking.

Brookside Immigration reviews relevant information against current program requirements, helping clients understand which factors are supported by their circumstances and documentation.

Language Results

Education and ECA

Review education credentials, Educational Credential Assessments and applicable recognition rules.

Work Experience

Assess employment history, qualifying experience and supporting evidence.

Important IRCC Update | October 2026

Express Entry CRS Changes Effective November 3, 2026

IRCC has announced changes to how certain Canadian work experience and qualifying job offers are assessed within the Comprehensive Ranking System.

Labour Market Integration

A new CRS factor will assess eligible Canadian work experience or certain qualifying job offers.

High-Wage Occupations

Eligible Canadian work experience in specified high-wage occupations may qualify for additional CRS points.

Qualifying Job Offers

Eligible job offers in designated high-wage occupations may receive CRS points under the new rules.

LMIA Requirements

Under the announced changes, an LMIA will no longer be required for qualifying job offers used for Express Entry program eligibility or CRS points. Other applicable immigration rules may still require an LMIA.

These are alternative point calculations. Candidates who qualify under both eligible Canadian work experience and job offer categories receive the higher applicable calculation, rather than adding both categories together.

IRCC has stated that existing Express Entry profiles will be recalculated when the changes take effect, and invitation rounds will be temporarily paused during the recalculation period.

Applicants should review their profile information and the current IRCC instructions before making updates. Additional CRS points do not guarantee an ITA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Express Entry Immigration FAQs

Common questions about Express Entry eligibility, CRS scoring, provincial nomination, ITAs and professional fees.

What is Express Entry in Canada?

Express Entry is IRCC’s online application management system for three federal immigration programs: Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Eligible candidates may enter the pool and receive an ITA through an invitation round.

How can an immigration consultant in Surrey help with my CRS score?

An RCIC can review your CRS information for accuracy, assess eligible ranking factors and discuss options involving language results, education, qualifying work experience and provincial nomination. Claimed points must be supported by your actual circumstances and documents. A score increase or invitation cannot be guaranteed.

How many CRS points are required for Express Entry?

There is no single CRS cut-off that applies to all Express Entry invitation rounds. The required score can vary depending on the selection criteria, round type and number of candidates invited. Meeting program eligibility does not guarantee an ITA.

Can BC PNP increase my Express Entry CRS score?

Yes, a qualifying provincial nomination accepted through an Express Entry aligned stream can provide 600 additional CRS points. Candidates must satisfy the applicable provincial and federal program requirements. Nomination and an ITA are not guaranteed.

What happens after I receive an Invitation to Apply?

You generally have 60 days after receiving an ITA to submit your permanent residence application. Brookside can assist with application forms, relevant supporting documents and submission under a separate Phase 2 representation agreement. Approval or processing time cannot be guaranteed.

What changes are coming to Express Entry in November 2026?

IRCC has announced CRS changes effective November 3, 2026. The changes introduce a Labour Market Integration factor involving eligible Canadian work experience or qualifying job offers, with additional provisions for high-wage occupations. LMIA requirements for qualifying Express Entry job offers are also changing. Candidates should consult IRCC’s official guidance because specific eligibility conditions apply.

How much does Express Entry representation cost at Brookside?

Express Entry profile creation costs $750 CAD. Following an ITA, permanent residence application representation starts at $2,200 CAD for one principal applicant. Additional Phase 2 professional fees are $1,000 for a spouse or common-law partner and $250 for each dependent child. Applicable taxes, government fees and third-party expenses are additional.

Can I apply through Express Entry without a consultant?

Yes. Immigration representation is optional. Eligible candidates can prepare and submit their own Express Entry profiles and permanent residence applications. Brookside also offers limited-scope application reviews for applicants preparing their own files.

Does hiring an RCIC guarantee permanent residence?

No. Hiring an RCIC cannot guarantee Express Entry eligibility, a CRS increase, an invitation, permanent residence approval or faster processing. IRCC makes decisions under the applicable immigration requirements.
